DOGS GONE SWIMMING: SEPTEMBER 13, 2014

The 6th annual “Dogs Gone Swimming” fundraiser is set for 10 a.m. to 3p.m., Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Norfolk Wellness and Fitness Center.

Coordinated by Friends of Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center, this event is a fundraiser to benefit the thousands of animals served by the center each year.

To learn more about how your donations and support make a difference, please read FRANCIE'S STORY HERE

(
This story, which first appeared on the Norfolk Animal Care Center's Facebook page, illustrates why we raise money and support for the Center -- from Dogs Gone Swimming to cookbook sales and more, when you make a donation, this is how you help make a difference.)

Dogs Gone Swimming and other programs help raise the funds needed to give Francie a well deserved second chance with medical care, love and support to help prepare her for her forever home.

Visit the DOGS GONE SWIMMING page to learn more about the event or to pre-register your dog for a swim session (highly recommended).

Thanks for your continued support for the animals at Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center!

MORE INFO ON THE TIDEWATER DOCK DOGS SHELTER PROGRAM

The Shelter dog program is the first of it’s kind in the DockDog community.  In 2012 the Tidewater DockDogs Board of Directors wanted to make an impact in the community with their compassion and love of shelter dogs and their ability to become just as talented at DockDogs as any other dog.

Sponsoring this program is a joint effort from Shipps Corner Pet Spa, from donating the dock time to orientate the dogs to the dock, Tidewater DockDogs members for volunteering their time training, taking pictures for cards to hang on the kennels stating “I’m training to become a DockDog, come see me at Bay Days” and finally and the most important piece, a volunteer from the shelter to commit to being the handler for both the orientation day and competition day.

Tidewater DockDogs pays for all the wave fee’s and because this is a club event we are able to set special time in a wave (also known as a heat) for these shelter dogs.

Three weeks before our event we invite the dogs out to the dock for practice and orientation, which is actually August 24, 2014 . These chosen dogs, have already displayed a “toy drive” and some sort love for water.  In our first year we had 10 dogs at orientation day, 6 jumped and showed confidence to be on the dock in front of a large crowd and where chosen to be sponsored.

Last year, 19 dogs showed up and we had to narrow our choices to 10 dogs to be sponsored. The most amazing thing happened; all of these dogs were adopted within 30 days of competing and many within the day of the event.  These are dogs that have spent often months or even years in the shelter, but giving them a job and something they feel excited about puts them in a whole different light that people see.

At the end of the event, it doesn’t matter, what dog jumped the farthest, or the highest, or even swam the fastest.  It’s about getting them out of the shelters and into their forever families.

Robin Thicke Is Finally Admitting His Marriage is Over

Earlier this week we heard that ROBIN THICKE and PAULA PATTON'S house was on the market.  That was a pretty strong hint that things weren't going to work out.

And now the word is that Robin has indeed admitted that the entire freakin' album he dedicated to Paula isn't going to get her back . . . even though it had a song on it CALLED "Get Her Back".

A source says Robin is done begging and has decided to move on, and an attorney is already working on a financial settlement.  One thing Robin is firm on, though, is that he won't be the one to file for divorce.

Five Disgusting Things on Your Body Right Now

Not to give you a complex or anything, but no matter how often you shower, your body is still COVERED in disgusting stuff.  Here are five nasty examples.

1.  Demodex mites.  They're are microscopic parasites that live on your eyelashes.  They feed on skin cells and oil secreted by your hair follicles.  Basically everyone has them, and at night they come out and walk around on your FACE.

2.  Fecal matter.  No matter how well you take care of business, there's always a LITTLE left behind . . . about a tenth of a gram, unless you're messy.  And it ends up on your underwear, and spreads to the rest of your clothes in the laundry.

3.  Dead skin cells.  Pretty much the whole outer layer of your skin is dead, and in the process of falling off at all times.  It's totally normal and harmless.  But every time you touch someone else . . . anywhere, in any way . . . you're touching dead skin.

4.  Skin-eating insects.  There's a common type of mite that feeds on dead skin cells.  It can be a cause of a common form of eczema . . . so if you have eczema, you might have the mites too.

5.  Belly button bacteria.  Your belly button tends to collect a lot of exotic bacteria . . . about 2,000 different species at any given time.  Researchers have found bacteria in people's navels that are usually found only in the polar ice caps and thermal vents.
