DOGS DESERVE BETTER

Amy Hines, from DOGS DESERVE BETTER, sat down with Ashley, from the Z MORNING ZOO to talk about the non-profit organization.

The mission of Dogs Deserve Better, Inc., is to provide a better life for abused, neglected and abandoned canines; especially those which are chained or penned without human companionship. We strive to accomplish this through advocating for humane legislation; promoting spay and neuter; educating communities on animal welfare; and rescuing and rehabilitating distressed canines.

Dogs Deserve Better, First Place Winner of the Chase Pet Protector Award, is a voice for chained and penned dogs, whose sadness speaks only through the eyes. As the days become years, many of these dogs sit, lay, eat, and defecate within the same 10-foot radius. Chained by the neck, they exist without respect, love, exercise, social interaction, and sometimes even basic nourishment. They live as prisoners, yet long to be pets.

For general information you can contact info@dogsdeservebetter.org.

For information on volunteering or fostering you can contact volunteer@dogsdeservebetter.org.

For information on getting help for dogs in need and adoption information you can contact rescue@dogsdeservebetter.org.

To report a chained or penned dog near you and ensure information gets directly into the caretaker's hands, find the address and fill out this form:

SMOKE BBQ SPIKE K9 FUND EVENT

SMOKES RESTAURANT
in Newport News is having a event January 21 to support SPIKES K9 FUND!

Come out and support Spike's K9 Fund while enjoying some wonderful food! Tickets are $25.00 per person at the door, which will include a Spike's K9 Fund souvenir pint glass, food and drinks! There will also be a SILENT AUCTION going on! Help some working dogs! Don't miss out!

LOCATION: 10900 Warwick Blvd, Newport News, VA 23601

Spikes K9 Fund was founded by James Hatch, a retired Special Warfare Operator.

As a K9 handler on several deployments, James’ life was regularly spared by the work of K9s – one of the most memorable was Spike. And on James’ final deployment, the night he was critically wounded, a K9 spared James’ life while losing his own.

From that evening on, James oriented his life around the training, care and preservation of working dogs. In addition to working as the founder and president of the fund, he works with local law enforcement and has adopted a former service dog in need of medical attention.

Spike’s K9 Fund, with your support, aspires to ensure every K9 receives exactly what they need every time. They purchase gear to keep them safer and for peak operation, and they pay for critical medical treatment to help them return to work or live their retirement days in complete health.
A working K9 is typically a breed bred for its dexterity, ability to focus, intelligence and athleticism. Once selected for work, that K9 will undergo rigorous training for tasks such as apprehending suspected criminals and sniffing out narcotics or explosives.

When the K9 is ready to work, there’s been significant, essential cost and time invested into their conditioning to ensure they’re an asset to their team as well as to reduce risk of harm to themselves and others when working.

What these K9s require:
  • leading-edge gear for their protection in violent or disaster situations,
  • equipment to help their crew be more effective, medical care when they become sick or injured
  • the organization they work for has to make a difficult and often detrimental decision of whether the cost of the need outweighs the cost of the specialized K9.

Rationale: In our over 200 year history there has never been an official national symbol that specifically recognizes in gratitude and respect the ultimate sacrifice made by members of the United States military in service to our nation. The Honor and Remember Flag was created for that purpose.

Goals:

  2. To build a consensus among the branches of the United States military, veterans organizations, service and civic groups, businesses and individuals in order to collectively solicit the Department of Defense and the United States Congress to propose and accept the Honor and Remember Flag as the official flag for honoring all fallen servicemen and servicewomen.

COLONIAL SHOOTING ACADEMY: Personal Protection inside the home

Yesterday Kyle and I attended our second course at Colonial Shooting Academy. This was the PERSONAL PROTECTION INSIDE THE HOME class. We were both really excited to take this class, especially Kyle because he wanted me to learn defensive shooting skills and different strategies for home safety and that is exactly what we did.

We started off in a class room setting and learned strategies for home safety, how to respond to violent confrontations, choosing a handgun for self-defense and we learned all about firearm laws. After the class we hit the range and started learning defensive shooting techniques. One of the first exercises we did was shoot very close to our target, like literally 2 ft. away. When I walked up to my target I got really nervous! It’s pretty intimidating shooting something that close, I’ve never done that before, but our instructor Paul was right there with me and made me feel super comfortable and walked me through the correct technique to do the exercise. After that exercise, I felt awesome! I was so comfortable on the range all because of Paul walking me through things, he was really patient with me too!  We did so many different types of defensive shooting, even scenarios like walking in a hallway, concealment, cover, laying down, we did it all! Kyle and I both took a lot away from this course. I would really recommend if you take this course, take it with your spouse! You will learn a lot and its fun, plus you will both be on the same page!

I can’t wait to finish the rest of the courses we are enrolled in at CSA and share the final video of our progression!

After finishing two classes so far with CSA, I cant stress enough how awesome their staff is, they are always very welcoming and it doesn't matter your experience level... if you have ZERO experience or are a pro.. there's a spot for you at CSA and the staff/instructors are always there to help!

Below is some video we took while on the range where you can see some of the different exercises Kyle and I did.

Poquoson Animal Welfare Sanctuary, Inc

THIS SUNDAY OCTOBER 18, 2015 P.A.W.S WILL BE FEATURED ON HAMPTON ROADS PERSPECTIVES WITH ASHLEY FROM THE Z MORNING ZOO!

Z104 at 6:00am

The New 101.3 at 7:30am

Poquoson Animal Welfare Sanctuary, Inc. is dedicated to the rescue and placement of abandoned, abused, and neglected animals (cats at this time). Our vision for these animals is a safe place that will provide them with food, shelter, medical care, rehabilitation, and adoption opportunities. Spay/neuter is a priority to control the overpopulation of these animals in our community.Poquoson Animal Welfare Sanctuary is a non profit organization (501(c)3) that relies on public support in the form of volunteers and donations.

POQUOSON ANIMAL WELFARE SANCTUARY:
“For anyone who is a fan of our Sanctuary, this is a brief description of how our cats and kittens live. We have a three acre fenced in property with a house and six kitty apartments/sheds/condos/cabanas. All of our cats and kittens are free roaming.

The kittens stay with their litter mates and moms in the apartments until they get old enough to go to fosters. We have a great socialization method for them. While they are growing and waiting until they can be spay/neutered and finish their kitten vaccines, they get lots of TLC with our cat whisperers. Our kittens stay with their litter mates and get exposure to other animals so they are able to adjust to their furrever family easily.

All of the big kitties have the run of the property. Some prefer indoor only life, some indoor/outdoor and others outdoor only. While the majority are permanent residents, we have about 15 adults looking for a family of their own. When considering adoption, they are awesome because we already know their personalities.

We take great pride in our family of furry friends and give them all the love and attention we can. The only thing better would be a home of their own where they can get even more love and attention from their furrever people.

We are open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon and other times by appointment.”

#GOGOLDFORWES

United In GRACE (Giving & Raising Awareness in Communities Everywhere) is a Christian-based non-profit organization that is committed to raising awareness of and funding for childhood cancer.

United In GRACE is founded by three women with a passion to change the views of the world and fight for the children who battle on a daily basis with the monster known as childhood cancer. Krista Pak was introduced to Lori Kincaide and Julie Dzieciolowski after they rallied together with other members of the local community to organize a last minute yard sale for Krista's son, Wes, so that he could make it to New York City in time for a life-saving surgery to remove the cancer from his tiny body. This amazing act of kindness, compassion, and awareness brought three complete strangers together to unite in the battle against childhood cancer.
